Things to look for on your kitten journey

Buying a kitten can be such an exciting time and one of the greatest joys that a family can go through but it can also be very overwhelming in the current day and age between scammers and back yard breeders its often hard to know if your making the right choice for you and your family when selecting a kitten and a breeder. We all to often hear of horror stories of sick kittens or even worse the kitten was sold via an online scam and never arrives. So we have compiled a list of helpful hints and red flags you can look for to help in your search.

Things to watch for
-
reverse search an image of the kitten in google, most scammers will have stollen images of another breeders.
-
pressure from a breeder of course the breeder cannot hold that kitten for you without a deposit, however they should not be putting undo pressure on you to buy ether.
-
Lack of cooperation for example unwilling to video chat prior to deposit, unwilling to provide basic information on health ect
-
cheap prices or no basic vet care registered breeders have a code of conduct that prevent them homing a kitten to early, not proving basic vet care such as vacc, desexing ect. If these are not done chances, are they not reputable. if the price seems to good to be true, it usualy is.
-
a web page does not mean safe in my research for creating my own page i came across a Persian breeder in Australia i had not heard of they sounded amazing and beautiful cats. I went to their health page and they started going on about Rabis ect (which of course we dont have here) this was a SCAMMER sight but looked so real unless you know what your looking for.
Things you can do to protect yourself
-
Contact your local cat club for a list of registered breeders in your area if you are interested in an kitten or breeder you can check that their registration is valid
-
Ask for a tour of their facilities, were the kittens grow up ect some breeders don't allow home visits for health, hygiene and security reasons however most reputable breeders will provide this via video link over the phone.
-
Ask questions, not only will you be fully informed but a good breeder will take this as a sign that you will provide a great home. These could include breed issues, diet, how there raised, health testing. Try to refrain from asking to many breed specific questions as this is something you should do prior to see if the breed is write for you before contacting breeders.
-
A written contract, these are a rather new idea and not all "good breeders" will be using them just yet but these are there to protect the breeder, the owner and most importantly the kitten. To outline what is expected of both parties prior, during and after the sale.
